Summary

"Heart of the West [Annotated]" by O. Henry is a compilation of short stories transporting readers to the American West of the late 1800s. These tales perfectly depict the West’s tough yet enchanting nature, filled with vibrant characters like cowboys and ranchers, as well as their relationships. The stories showcase much humor and strong emotions while exploring love, one’s sense of self, and expectations placed on people by society. The collection starts with two main characters, Baldy Woods and Webb Yeager, talking over drinks in a railroad town. As they speak, Webb reveals he feels less important in his marriage with Santa McAllister, a rich cattle owner. Baldy suggests Webb needs to take charge as a man, to be a 'king,' instead of just a 'prince-consort.' The conversation emphasizes Webb’s struggle to find his place, especially since his wife is in charge of the business. As the stories progress, central ideas about being a man, hopes for romance, and difficult relationships are demonstrated, setting the scene for Western adventures.
